My Teaching Philosophy
I wrote this philosophy my first year of teaching. Recently, I came across it and decided it is still my philosophy today.
"As a teacher, I enjoy helping students learn. I believe we learn our entire life regardless of our age. There are many different ways to learn and it is important to recognize that students learn differently and have different learning needs. I try to meet the different needs of my students by giving them choices, encouraging positive peer collaboration, modeling good business behavior, and allowing them the freedom to pursue some of their own ideas in class. One thing I want to be certain to convey to my students is that learning is exciting and rewarding, but not without challenge. If the work is too easy and does not require thinking skills you are not really learning. I like to help students experience success in the classroom and build their confidence and interest. It is a great moment to see the light bulb go on when someone gets something they had trouble understanding, or to see a student master a new skill. I try to understand my students and see things from their perspective. It's important to have empathy with students and let them know you are interested in helping them. There's always hope that a student who seems to have given up can be helped. Students need to be treated with respect if they are to develop into adults who are respectful of others. Reaching out to the students and creating and modeling good rapport is important to both teacher and student."
